Fact: The human tongue has the power to bless or curse another…

Part of self control is being able to control your tongue.
Let’s read Proverbs 13: 3:

“Those who control their tongue will have a long life;
Opening your mouth can ruin everything.”

This is a scriptural reference to receiving a blessing for controlling your tongue. That is how important self control is to God. Self control begins with controlling your mouth, we are to think before we react to anything. Remember to watch what you allow to come out of your mouth!

Key Point: Self Control Begins With Mouth Control!

The key word for this whole study is “Self Control” so let’s look at 2 Peter 1:5-8 and examine self control for a minute:

“In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone.
The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

This verse shows us that our faith must show results it can’t be empty. We show our faith through our continual hard work to cultivate our Christian character. It is our responsibility to learn and grow as a Christian. As we cultivate these Christian characters they produce fruit. It is called “Fruits of the Spirit.” You can find these fruits in Galatians 5:22. These fruits fulfill God’s laws. They are all a product of faith and self control.

A lot of people in the church observe the rituals in a church setting but they do not show love. The fulfillment of Gods laws is love and that is a fruit, or product of your Christianity…

Key Point: Our faith must show results and results come with self control…

It is so important for us as Christians to show self control that the bible outlines over and over again for us exactly what God means by Self Control. He gives us word for word detail, even in various positions, what he expects from us and every one of them specifies, you guessed it, self-control.

Page 3. Self-Control

Let’s look at 1 Timothy 3: 2. Paul wrote Timothy specific details on how he expects Timothy to train, lead, etc. This particular chapter outlines the role of a church elder.
It reads:

“So an elder must be a man whose life is above reproach. He must be faithful to his wife. He must exercise self-control, live wisely, and have a good reputation. He must enjoy having guests in his home, and he must be able to teach.”

Not only did Paul stress self control to the elders but he stressed it to the elder’s wives. Read 1 Timothy 3:11 Paul says that the wives must have self control also.

See, we have to remember that God’s spirit is a spirit of self discipline so we are to imitate his spirit if he truly dwells within us. The proof that he is within us is our self control! (2 Timothy 1:7)

As you read through Chapters of the bible, Such as, 1 Peter 1: 13 you begin to see that we all have a call to live Holy as Christians. Living Holy means to have mental and physical self control. There is no excuse not to have self control because we have been shown examples by Jesus and past biblical characters plus we have the bible to help us cultivate our character. We are to take scripture as God’s inspired word and do as we are told so that we may also share in the blessings to come!

Key Point: Titus chapter 2, and other chapters and verses stress right living for us all, and each emphasize self control!
